Short answer
Tell the conductor or station staff before trying to exit. JR Central’s lost-ticket procedure generally requires buying the same journey and facilities again as a marked lost-ticket reissue. At exit, obtain and keep the repurchased-ticket receipt. If the original is found within a year, there is a refund procedure with conditions and fees. A booking screenshot is not a promised free replacement.
Do this now
- 1Check safely before declaring the ticket lost.
Practical advice: check your wallet and ticket holder away from the gate lane.
- 2Speak to the conductor or staffed gate.
Say which paper ticket is missing and show anything you still have.
- 3Ask for the lost-ticket procedure.
Let staff match the journey and facilities; do not buy a random replacement independently.
- 4Collect the receipt at the exit.
Keep the repurchased-ticket paperwork and ask what to do if the original turns up.
Did the gate collect it?
If you saw the gate retain a ticket while returning another, ask staff whether it was normal collection. Do not start a lost-ticket claim merely because you have fewer pieces after passing a gate.
A discount or travel-agency ticket
JR Central describes repurchase without the discount for a lost discounted or agency ticket, with some exceptions for unused tickets. Ask staff to identify the product before paying. A matching route alone does not settle every condition.
If you find the original later
JR Central’s procedure calls for the original and repurchased ticket within one year; agency purchases go back to the original agency. The journey, train and facilities must match, and charges or exclusions can apply. Ask for the exact process while you have staff in front of you.
If that fails
Practical advice: if you cannot identify the ticket or pay immediately, explain that at the staffed gate and ask for the next step. Keep reservation evidence available to help the conversation, but do not assume it replaces the missing paper ticket. This guide covers paper-ticket loss, not a missing phone or IC card.
