I Entered the Wrong Ticket Gate with My Suica — What Should I Do?

Ask staff to check the entry before you try to undo it yourself.

Short answer

Go to the staffed gate and explain whether you have actually boarded a train. Practical advice: do not repeatedly tap out and back in to test a cancellation. JR East offers a paid same-station admission service at eligible gates, so an exit tap is not a universal undo button. The relevant operator must confirm how to handle your mistaken entry and any charge.

Do this now

  1. 1
Stop inside the paid area and check the signs.

Practical advice: identify the operator and line, not only the station name.

  2. 2
Go to the staffed gate with the same card or phone.

Explain that you entered by mistake and whether you traveled.

  3. 3
Ask which exit or transfer route to use.

Have staff confirm how the current entry should be handled first.

  4. 4
    Confirm your next boarding method.

Do not start another card journey until you understand the instruction.

Wrong entrance, or wrong railway?

Practical advice: if you only chose an inconvenient entrance, ask whether your intended platform is reachable inside the same paid area. If you entered another operator’s area, show the destination and line you intended to use. Do not assume matching station names mean matching gates.

A same-station exit may be charged

JR East’s Suica guide describes Touch de Ekinaka: entry and exit at the same station within two hours at eligible automatic gates can deduct an admission charge. This describes station admission, not a guaranteed cancellation of an accidental tap.

PASMO’s FAQ says station-only admission is subject to the railway operator’s arrangements. Ask the operator at your gate instead of applying one railway’s policy everywhere.

You already traveled, or mixed in a paper ticket

Tell staff the actual stations and any other ticket used. PASMO’s gate guidance warns against combining other tickets or another IC card at ordinary gates, while noting that some transfer gates handle combinations differently. Practical advice: show everything together rather than guessing a gate sequence.

If that fails

If the entry issue remains when you next try to travel, return to staff with the same card and explain the sequence. If the problem is a missed exit from an earlier journey, follow that separate correction route.

Useful Japanese

間違えて入場しました。まだ電車には乗っていません。 — I entered by mistake. I have not boarded a train yet. Use the second sentence only if it is true.
