What is usually possible before check-in

A same-day drop-off for a booked guest and a normal suitcase is the request most likely to be accepted. Arrive at reception, show the booking name and ask the hotel to hold the bag until your room is ready.

This is separate from early check-in. The hotel may store the suitcase while still keeping the normal room check-in time.

After check-out, same-day storage is also common, but collection deadlines vary. Confirm the pick-up time rather than assuming the front desk or baggage room stays available all night.

When you need advance confirmation

Dropping a bag the day before your stay, leaving it overnight, storing it between two reservations or sending it by courier before arrival are different from same-day pre-check-in storage. Hotel Monterey’s published conditions, for example, say pre-arrival baggage is kept only when the hotel has accepted the request.

Small properties, capsule hotels, hostels and self-check-in accommodation may have limited staff or storage space. Several suitcases, sports equipment and oversized baggage can also be refused even when one ordinary case would be accepted.

Items a hotel may not store

Restrictions are property-specific. As a practical rule, keep passports, cash, jewelry, medication and expensive electronics with you. Ask before leaving fragile items, liquids, fresh or refrigerated food, dangerous goods, or anything unusually valuable or large.
