Short answer
Go to the staffed Shinkansen gate or counter and keep your tickets and reservation evidence. SmartEX has specific handling for significant delays on other JR Shinkansen or conventional lines. What staff can arrange depends on your product, whether you collected tickets and seat availability. Hayatoku needs particular care. This is not a blanket promise of free rebooking or a refund for every delayed connection.
Do this now
- 1Tell staff which previous train was delayed.
Practical advice: keep the reservation and any available delay information ready; explain the actual connection.
- 2Show the ticket product and boarding method.
Say whether you have paper tickets already or still use an IC card or QR ticket.
- 3Ask about the next permitted departure and seating.
Do not assume an empty reserved seat is assigned to you.
- 4Confirm the price before changing a discount booking.
For Hayatoku, ask staff about disruption handling before making a normal self-service change.
SmartEX: before or after departure
For the significant-JR-delay case in FAQ 588, before departure and before gate entry or ticket pickup, SmartEX asks customers to change the reservation themselves. After departure, consult Shinkansen station staff. Its guidance includes same-day non-reserved travel; staff must identify the suitable service for your itinerary.
Paper tickets already collected, or Hayatoku
If you cannot change the booking yourself, SmartEX directs you to staff. Reserved seating on a following train depends on vacant seats. For Hayatoku, another train may be offered for a significant delay, subject to availability; a normal self-service change moves to the normal fare with a price difference.
A non-JR delay or another ticket product
The cited SmartEX exception is for significant delays on other JR trains. Do not extend it to a delayed taxi, flight or every private railway. For a different booking service, operator or package, ask the issuer and station staff which terms apply. Practical advice: keep all journey evidence until the matter is resolved.
If that fails
Ask for a concrete onward option, including any extra cost, before purchasing again. SmartEX publishes disruption notices on the member menu; check the notice that applies to your section. If nothing runs tonight, ask staff about remaining transport before leaving the station.
