What the gate is doing
The fare is calculated when you exit. JR East states that a card with insufficient balance cannot be used to leave the gate until the shortage is resolved.
The card remains linked to that journey. Do not enter again with another card or walk around the barrier.
Carry a small cash buffer
JR East’s visitor guidance says physical Suica cards are topped up with cash at compatible machines. Keep enough yen for a top-up, especially when travelling late or outside large stations.
A card must have enough balance for at least the minimum fare to enter; the actual fare is deducted at exit.

Can I combine two IC cards to pay one trip?
No. JR East’s rules prohibit using two or more IC cards for the same ride.
Can I top up with a credit card?
For a physical Suica, JR East says charging at station machines is cash-only. Mobile-card options can differ.
